Import from China to India

About 14% of imports made by India come from China. Some of the large importing sectors include cellphones, machinery, electrical goods, food, and clothing. During the period from April 2019 to February 2020, India purchased a wide variety of items from China worth $62.4 billion, which ranks it as the nation’s second-largest trade partner just behind the United States.

The volume of trade between India and China:

In 2018-19, India’s imports from China totaled US$ 70.32 billion and exports to China totaled US$ 16.75 billion. As a result of India’s trade deficit with China in 2018-19, the cumulative trade deficit stands at US$ 53.57 billion.

China is India’s most important supplier by far. In 2018, Chinese products made up 60% of all Indian imports. The top products imported from China are machinery, textiles, and electric goods such as televisions and smartphones.

So, in 2017 India imported electrical machinery worth $1.18 Billion from China, which accounts for almost 14% of its total import (according to data published by the government).

What happens if China’s imports are restricted?

If the price of imported commodities rises, consumers may decide to buy less because they’ll see the higher prices and feel like they’re receiving less value for their money. This could result in a decline in consumer product sales, which would negatively impact companies that produce these items.
If the supply of raw materials is interrupted in any given industry, many local goods may eventually suffer. Since 2017, the most important item India has imported from China is electrical machinery.
All types of products are at risk to supply chain-based interruptions. Some of the most vulnerable categories include pharmaceuticals and electronics, which may see decreases in production because of a shortage of materials required.
